Prevent Suicide Call

Vicarious trauma does not occur instantaneously. It is a process that slowly changes those individuals who empathetically engage with trauma survivors or those actively going through a traumatic experience.

As an ER nurse for over ten years and an inpatient psychiatric nurse for eight years, I have experienced vicarious trauma first hand and understand what health professionals and first responders experience first hand.

  • Distancing self, numbness, detachment, cutting patients off, staying busy, and avoiding actively listening to the patients of their traumatic experience.

  • Loss of hope, becoming pessimistic, and cynical towards others.

  • Difficulty in maintaining professional boundaries with patients, such as trying to do more than is in the professional "role" to assist the patient.

  • Experiencing increasing or lingering feelings of anger, rage, and sadness about a patient's traumatic event and/or outcome (may even have thoughts of self-harm)

  • Possible use of substances or alcohol to cope with unresolved feelings, emotions
